Galentine's Day Cards — Mailed For You

  • Is Galentine's day a real thing?

One hundo percent; Galentine's Day is as real as any other holiday. Valentine's Day is for celebrating the love you share with your romantic partner, but Galentine's Day is for celebrating the bond you share with your gals (especially the ones you wouldn't know what to do without). And even though it's not as widely known as Valentine's Day; Leslie Knope had the right idea: Galentine's Day should 100% be a federal holiday.
  • What is the purpose of Galentine's day?

The purpose of Galentine's Day in the words of the great founder Leslie Knope is to "celebrate your lady friends."

If you want to get down to the nitty gritty details, the purpose of Galentine's Day can be boiled down to two main things. First, the point is to lift each other up. The world often feels like it's trying to tear women down, but Galentine's Day gives ladies a specific moment each year to lift each other up (mostly in a figurative manner). Additionally, Galentine's Day helps us to make sure the lady friends in our lives know and feel just how much they are appreciated by their own lady friends. (Again in the brilliant words of Leslie Knope it's a fun loop of "ladies celebrating ladies.")
  • What do you write in a Galentine's Day card?

Like you would with a Vday card, you'll want to write from the heart. This holiday is to celebrate the special bond you share with the ladies in your life and the card should reflect just that. A few tips to get your Galentine's Day message going:

    • Lift em' up.
    • Show some gratitude.
    • Look forward optimistically.

One of the many wonderful things about celebrating Galentine's Day is the opportunity it gives us to lift each other up. Think of this day as one giant wave of YOU GO GIRL and channel that kind of energy into your Galentine's Day card. You can do this by complimenting something about your gal pals. Think of specific examples in each of their lives where they've shined and lift them up by pointing them out. You can also point to a quality or example of an action in their lives that doesn't get enough praise. If you want to take Miss Knope's lead, you can go hard on the compliments by compounding them one on top of the other ("beautiful, naive, sophisticated, newborn baby" for example) or do something that's more aligned with your own way of complimenting. However it is you choose to lift up your gals, be specific, sincere, and personal to each one of them.

Aside from lifting each other up, Galentine's Day is here to make sure we don't take our gals for granted. Our lady friends are by our sides (figuratively or literally) helping us navigate this nutso world so it's our responsibility to make sure they know we appreciate them. Use your Galentine's Day card message to show some gratitude for your ladies. The easiest and most straight forward way to do that is simply to say thank you. Just be sure to have something to thank them for. For example, "Thank you for always responding to my texts, no matter what; I know I can always count on you."

Finally, after you've done your duty of lifting them up and showing your gratitude you'll want to look forward. It's a simple tactic you can use to wrap up just about any message, but especially nice in a Galentine's Day card. You can use this as a mechanism to make plans for your next brunch date or even a FaceTime call. However you decide to look forward, make sure to keep it optimistic and make it specific. What exactly are you excited for? You could, for example, say something along the lines of "I can't wait to squeeze your beautiful face at our yearly reunion."

As always, take what you like and leave what you don't. You can write your Galentine's Day card however you want. One thing we will say is to try to keep it personal by including specific examples. The more generic the card, the less impact it will have.
